Q&A

What are you doing to practice and promote soil and water quality?

Farming in SW Iowa comes with challenges of erosion because of our land topography. I started building terraces on my farms since buying my first farm, all of my own row crop acres are terraced. I’ve encouraged and helped landlords to build terraces on their farms also. We started using cover crops as a means of forage for our cattle rations and still do but also have expanded to several hundreds of acres for erosion and soil health benefits.

What is being done in your county to support soil and water quality?

In Page County, there is a push from NRCS for all kinds of conservation benefits with cost share including cover crops the last few years.

What could be done with more public funding for soil and water quality?

Locally more funding could help alleviate the several year waiting list on terrace cost share applications.
