Q&A

What are you doing to practice and promote soil and water quality?

We have discontinued the use of commercial dry fertility and moved to infurrow liquid fertilizer at the time of plant. We have cut our nitrogen usage 20% to 0.8lbs/bushel. We are 80% vertical till in even corn on corn acres. Disc ripping in odd shaped fields or removing compaction from traffic.

What is being done in your county to support soil and water quality?

Many farmers care well for their waterways. Tile installation continues to be a main method of increasing soil oxygen. On I35, south of Clear Lake there is a wetland project addressing land productivity.

What could be done with more public funding for soil and water quality?

Much like the project on I35, if projects are done on skeptics’ and loud farmers’ farms, then I think it will help spread practices.
