Q&A

What are you doing to practice and promote soil and water quality?

We started no-till on all our acres in 1993. We strip-till and use cover crops. We promote our practices by doing custom strip-till, no-till drilling and cover crop applications.

What is being done in your county to support soil and water quality?

Since our county is in the Raccoon River watershed there has been a lot of promoting of cover crop and reduce tillage. We work with Iowa cover crop which is operated by a couple of our neighbors. Through this we have spoke at several local and area field days on the values of cover crop.

What could be done with more public funding for soil and water quality?

Public funding is helpful in getting farmers to try cover crops. I do think this is a short term solution. It is important to quantify for producers value of cover crop and reduce tillage.
